Welcome!

Welcome to this course on Contemporary Christian Women! I plan to use this blog as a supplement to our course together. Along with the use of your binder, I would like to use this blog to assist you in "enfleshing" the course content.

What we will be doing in class this week:
1. Introductions
2. Binder Overview
3. Call On the Spirit exercise (completed at home)
4. Selection of Women
5. Introduction to Divestment article

For your consideration. This video and song reflects the nature of the main project of this course as described in your binder. I share it with you in order elicit the images and contributions of those women of the past who fought for human dignity and freedom.

On a lighter but equally poignant note when the below song," Respect" by Otis Reading and sung by Aretha Franklin, was released in 1967, it was just two years prior that the Voting Rights Act of 1965  was signed by President Johnson. It provided for federal oversight and enforcement of voter registration in states and individual voting districts with a history of discriminatory tests and underrepresented populations. It prohibited discriminatory practices preventing African Americans and other minorities from registering and voting, and electoral systems diluting their vote. On June 12, 1967 in Loving v. Virginia, the U.S Supreme Court rules that prohibiting interracial marriage is unconstitutional. On April 4, 1968, Dr. King is assassinated. Just seven days later, April 11th, the Civil Rights Act is signed. The Fair Housing Act is Title VIII of this act and bans discrimination in the sale, rental and financing of housing.
